New recruits enter the Tulsa Police Training Center as Apprentice Police Officers (
APO).
APOs receive
23 weeks of training which is the most comprehensive program of instruction available in the state.

Special activities, like realistic situational training exercises, exemplify the professionalism of Tulsa's outstanding police academy.
Instruction is held on a Monday through Friday, eight hour-a-day schedule in Tulsa's up-to-date training facility.
Probationary Period
Upon graduation, recruits will be sworn in as a Tulsa Police Officer. Sixteen weeks of extensive on-the-job training under the supervision of three different Field Training Officers will follow. The first year from date of hire as a City of Tulsa employee will be on a probationary status.
Advancement
- Officers are eligible to participate in promotional examinations for the rank of Corporal after three years time in grade.
- An Officer can test for the rank of Sergeant after five years time in grade.
- A Corporal with a minimum of one year time in grade can test for the rank of Sergeant.
- A Sergeant can test for the rank of Captain after one year time in grade.
- A Captain can test for the rank of Major after one year time in grade.
- A Major can test for the rank of Deputy Chief and Chief after one year time in grade.
