DUE TO CURRENT ECONOMIC CONDITIONS WITHIN THE CITY OF TULSA, ALL CITIZEN POLICE ACADEMIES HAVE BEEN INDEFINITELY SUSPENDED.
The Tulsa Police Department is seeking members of the community to join the Citizens Police Academy (CPA). The Citizens Police Academy was designed to allow members of the community an opportunity to develop a better understanding of their police department through education. Also, allow members of the Tulsa Police Department to gain, establish, and maintain trust and respect from the citizens that we protect and serve.
Since the Citizens Police Academy’s inception in 1987, TPD has conducted a total of 46 classes with over one thousand graduates. Many of our graduates are actively involved with CPAAA, CAPS, and VIPS programs.
The CPA Academies are conducted twice a year, at no cost to the participants. Academies are scheduled for 14 consecutive weeks, meeting on Tuesday evenings from 6:00 to 9:00 P.M. The Academies generally run from February to May, and September to December. Anyone may apply; however, members of the Tulsa Police Department select participants based on them meeting the minimum requirements.
The Citizens Police Academy Coordinator takes applications over the telephone. Upon obtaining information, a background check will be conducted. Though the CPA has few restrictions for participation, having a felony arrest, an outstanding arrest warrant, or an unpaid traffic citation will disqualify an individual from participating in the program. Qualified applicants will then be sent a conformation welcome letter, as well as a list of Academy Rules and Regulations.
During the 14 weeks of training, members will have an opportunity to meet the Chief and many other members of the Tulsa Police Department. Class members will receive instruction on the following: recruit selection and training, department organization, use of force, criminal law and investigation, shooting decisions, street gangs, specialty units, patrol and traffic functions, self defense, a tour of the main police station, lab, one of the uniform div., and firearms training. Also, at the conclusion of your training, all members will have an opportunity to go on a police ride-along.
If all this peaks your interest and sounds like something you would be interested in, and are qualified for, please contact Cpl. Larry Edwards (Class Coordinator) at (918) 591-4517, or e-mail: lledwards@ci.Tulsa.ok.us
